Biography:
My education was the product of many years attending college evenings and weekends. I acquired an Associate in Arts, and a Bachelors Degree in General Studies with a focus on The Humanities from the University of New Hampshire. I earned a Masters of Science in Human Services from Springfield College, School of Human Services in Manchester, NH. I have been teaching at two colleges in New Hampshire since 1992. Prior to moving to Sarasota, I was an Associate Professor and Department Coordinator for the Human Service and Psychology Division at Hesser College in Manchester, NH. I retired from the telecommunication industry where I had the opportunity to contribute in the following roles: Lineman, Cable Splicer, Technical Instructor for IBEW, Learning Facilitator at the New England Telephone Quality Institute in Boston, and the New England Technician Learning Coordinator for the NYNEX five state network. I spent many years working as a volunteer with several human services agencies. Upon retirement, and while still teaching at two colleges, I worked as a community organizer for New Hampshire Citizen Action. Later I became a homeless outreach and learning coordinator for New Hampshire’s oldest Human Service agency. Some of the courses that I have taught are: English Composition, The History of Social Movements in the United States, The History of Human Services in America, Introduction to Human Services, Contemporary Social Problems, and Marriage and Family.
I believe that we all learn differently, and experience life differently so it is necessary to utilize various methods to create an exciting and positive learning environment. I achieve learning objectives through lectures, discussions, small group participation, and student’s individual exploration of topics. To supplement classroom activities, I often utilize music, video and film media, and contemporary subject literature, as well as guest speakers, if available. Arming students with communication skills, encouraging enthusiasm for life long learning, and developing an understanding and respect for diverse social groups improves employability. These skills also shape the student's understanding of human behavior and help develop leadership skills. I strive to create a learning enthusiasm that will transcend the classroom experience. I believe the classroom should allow students the opportunity to grow and develop for the workplace, their families, and for their communities.. The classroom is not a place where people make mistakes; it is a repository of ideas where students learn lessons.
