Biography: The following quotes reflect my general philosophy of education and learning:
“Learning is the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience.” David Kolb
“Learning is directly proportional to the amount of fun you have…not a meaningless waste of the learner’s time, but a purposeful interaction that encourages participation and involvement.” Bob Pike
As an instructor in the Community College, I believe my role is to engage students while providing and facilitating a learning environment that emphasizes student involvement, creativity and experiential learning. My goal is to help students to be successful and encourage their intellectual development through reflective, reciprocal and collaborative learning. I want to make the course content relevant to the student’s life and as the instructor, be enthusiastic about the process. I integrate a variety of activities, strategies and assessments/evaluations that are designed to encourage students to learn according to their own individual personality and style of learning.
I have been an adjunct professor for both St. Petersburg College and Eckerd College. I have been working in the field of Human Services for the past 18 years, the last eleven of which have been in the Tampa Bay area. My experiences have included: child care work in group home settings, child welfare case management, community agency counseling, child welfare administration, private practice in adoption, consultation, teaching in the public school system, and working with adults with developmental disabilities. I am the Executive Director and founder of Axis Adoption & Consulting Services Inc., a not-for-profit child-placing adoption agency, since March of 2004.
I am a native of Cleveland, Ohio. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Physical Education from Baldwin-Wallace College. I received her Master of Education degree in Community Agency Counseling from Cleveland State University. After moving to Florida, I obtained my Doctor of Education degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of Sarasota (now Argosy University). I am licensed in Florida and Ohio as a mental health counselor.
I am thrilled to be working full time in the Human Services program at St. Petersburg College. I have had the opportunity to collaborate with many individuals in the community to discuss plans for making the Human Services program at SPC even better. I feel privileged to be working in such a wonderful community with individuals who are dedicated advocates in this field.
