Biography: Jeanna Ojeda, Ph. D., Linguistics, University of Florida in Gainesville
Associate Professor of ESL for Academic Purposes
Tarpon Springs Campus - St. Petersburg College
There is no more rewarding profession than mine. I consider myself honored and blessed to be teaching English as a Second Language for Academic Purposes at St. Petersburg College, Tarpon Springs Campus. Unique and sparkling with individuality and enthusiasm, my learners from all around the globe shine a bright light on my world every working day. Their charming personalities, cheerful outlooks, and tenacity for learning are awe-inspiring! They give me much that I value dearly, sharing their myriad diverse and lovely world cultures and worldviews. I take great pride in guiding them as we travel along in learning adventures. An optimist by nature, I have an insatiable thirst for knowledge, so it is as enjoyable as it is intellectually stimulating for me to dedicate my energies and capacities toward increasing the English language proficiency of my learners. My professional mission is to merge my education and experience in linguistics with my love of languages and diverse cultures; I thoroughly enjoy teaching, happy in my goal of guiding every individual learner toward achieving his or her personal best, for a better life ahead.
Class is fun. While we work together, it does not feel like work, and class time flies by quickly. Learning is always engaging, and no question or difficulty will stop anyone's progress. Challenges in the classroom inspire effective problem-solving techniques, and action is all aimed at arriving at interpersonal and academic college-readiness in English. I naturally and easily relate to my students. In 1986 and 1987, my husband and I sojourned outside of the United States, meanwhile experiencing firsthand both the hardships and rewards that learning a new language in a new land brings. I understand the frustrations of searching for a way to communicate complex thoughts in a second or a third language, and I have the tools to help.
In my toolbox are a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Florida--in Gainesville--a Master’s Degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from the University of South Florida--in Tampa--and over 19 years of experience teaching all levels and all skill areas of ESL for Academic Purposes. The majority of my teaching experience has come from teaching at St. Petersburg College, but for two years I also taught courses in ESL and Scholarly English Writing at the University of Florida.
To my ESL students, with all their warmth, charm, and uniqueness, I enthusiastically dedicate my teaching expertise and energies. Please call or visit me at the Tarpon Springs Campus if I can assist in any way. Leave an email (preferred) or voicemail message if I am away, and I will gladly reply at my first convenience. Kindly write or speak in English. Clearly present your full name, location, contact information, and the specifics of your request. If you leave a voicemail, please give an email also, if possible, plus related background information so I can quickly meet your needs. Thank you sincerely.
Kindest Regards,
Jeanna Ojeda, Ph.D.
