  Biography:

Next semester, Spring 2010 will be my last semester teaching for this college. I am retiring! It has been my greatest joy and pleasure to have had the opportunity to help so many people in their quest to better their lives. Each one of my students left an impression in my heart. It is my students that I will miss when I leave. Even on the darkest of days, all I have to do to feel wonderful is to log into an online class or walk into my classroom and start interacting with everyone to find joy. I will miss that. So, to each of you, either in a traditional classroom or online, thank you for being you!  I can see my retirement just up ahead even as I am lookiing back over the years. Honestly and truly, there is no place like SPC! Go Titans!

I have 1 daughter and 1 daughter/niece, 4 grandchildren, 1 great-grand child and 1 great-grandchild on the way, 2 dogs and 1 cat. I love to cook and invent new recipes. Currently I am compiling my recipes and those of my family members into a Family Cookbook. For fun I love playing my Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS Lite games. I also enjoy mowing the lawn, cooking out on the grill, exercising indoors or out, reading books for pleasure (currently into J.D. Robb, Dan Brown, John Grisham among others), playing with my GPS system, and preparing for various professional licenses.

I have had a varied career. I worked at the Kennedy Space Center during the last days of Mercury, followed by Gemini and then Apollo. I was there when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon and when Apollo 13 caught fire. I left after Apollo 14 to move to Germany for a year with my husband and small daughter. After returning to the states and finding myself a divorced mom with no job skills, I worked as a cocktail waitress and bartender. This lasted for 14 years while I raised my daughter and my niece and put myself through SPJC. I majored in Business Admin and Computer Programming (and I graduated with "Honors"!). I continued my education at University of South Florida majoring in Finance (no honors--it was tough!). After graduating, the world was waiting to hire me at huge wages (LOL) so I took a job at Burger King as an assistant manager--earned an award for having the hottest and tastiest burgers and fries. :D I also worked selling chains-by-the- inch at Countryside Mall during the Winter Holiday season. (Chains-by-the-inch consists of fake gold strands wrapped on huge rolls that are cut into necklaces that eventually turn your neck green.) While doing that, I worked for a florist as a bookkeeper. Actually I worked a total of 5 part-time jobs during that time, 7 days and nights a week. Anything to pay the bills while I conducted my job search! The bad part is that eventually I was so worn out that I couldn't tell day from night.

I began teaching in 1987 for the Pinellas County School Board on a part-time basis (Computerized Accounting and various software applications). I also taught for Segal Institute (Legal Secretary), Pasco-Hernando Community College (Medical Office Assistant and Computer Classes), and SPC (computer applications).

In 1990 I started my own computer consulting business. Coupled with teaching, I actually made a nice living. But my heart was, and will always be, with teaching. So I took out $50,000 in student loans and returned to school.

I earned my Master of Science degree in Sept. 1999 in Computer Science and Information Technology from Nova SouthEastern University. All classes were online and there I developed my love for online education.

Two classes before I earned my Master's, I was hired full time with SPC. It was my dreams come true! I have been with the college for almost 19 years, but they only count it as 12 because adjunct time is not counted. When I received my one-year pin from the college, I had to measure it in dog years (seven years for one year)!

I have authored and published many materials for Course Technology, an industry leader in educational publishing. The most recent is an instructor manual for an introductory course in Information Systems Management that is used nationwide. I also have written materials for SQL scripting and served on the National Advisory Board for MS Access 2003.  In 2005 I concluded a year-long study conducted by Rochester Institute of Technology for the Deaf in Rochester, NY. This study researched and implemented instructional concepts and theory in teaching of deaf and disabled students. This study was very important to me because I am hard-of-hearing/deaf and I understand the frustrations associated with disabilities.

In 2004 and again in 2005, I received the honor of being selected to appear in "Who's Who Among America's Teachers". In 2007 I received the honor "Who’s Who Among Collegiate Instructors". These honors are given only to instructors who have been nominated by their students. So to my students, I say "Thank you from the bottom of my heart! To be nominated once is an honor. To be nominated multiple times is a blessing."
