Welcome to Web and Instructional Technology Services reusable learning object site. The term reusable learning object (RLO) has become a "hot" topic over the last couple of years. The first question that comes to mind for most faculty is what is a RLO? The answer is not as straight forward as one would think.

You can think of a learning object as a resource that can be used to help enhance the intended learning outcome. To some people it could be collection of web pages. To others a learning object requires a certain level of interaction. This is the problem with the definition of a reusable learning object. Most agree that learning objects should have a set of learning objectives and outcomes that meet those objectives. The learning object can be created using animation or just text as long as it meets the objectives and outcomes.

If this definition is still not clear, perhaps some example RLO's would help. Below is are three links some different types RLO's (all require the Flash Player):

  • Basic Spanish WordsBasic Spanish Words Flashcards - This RLO are flashcards created by an instructor. The objective of this RLO is provide a way for students to practice difficult concepts or terms.
  • Interactive Question about the Dodge Tool - This RLO allow the student to some quick feedback on a question. When the student answers the question, they will see the last five responses from other students within a course.
  • Population Density Game - This RLO shows how a game can be used as a learning tool. This object is used in a biological science lab course to help students learn about population density. You click on the fruit and try to eat any insects (by clicking on them) that come out of the fruit.

Reusable Learning Objects can enhance your course whether you are teaching an online or face-to-face course. The RLO site is your one stop shop for requesting, understanding, and obtaining learning objects.
